Annual Memorial Day Service & Balloon Release

Our annual Memorial Day Service & Balloon Release will begin at noon Monday, May 29, 2017 at Sunset Hill Cemetery (50 Fountain Drive, Glen Carbon, IL 62034). Our "Salute to Veterans" display features more than 1,300 flags, each one placed and labeled in memory of a specific veteran interred at our cemetery.

The full-size flags are installed by our dedicated staff and volunteers. The task begins at 7 a.m. the morning of the event, and is completed within two hours. The display officially opens to the public at 9 a.m. to give visitors ample time to walk the flag-lined roads before the Memorial Day Service begins at noon.

If you or your veteran group, scout troop, social club, service association, or other organization would like to volunteer to help install flags, please print and fill out this form (PFD) to bring with you to the cemetery.

Also during this event, we will have tables set up in the park where visitors can send a note of thanks to veterans. All notes collected will be forwarded to A Million Thanks, an organization that sends letters of thanks and encouragement directly to our brave service members.
